Why do you work at The Renewal Workshop?
I grew up hiking, biking, and fishing with my brothers in Michigan which fostered a deep love of the natural world. As someone who spends a lot of time in the outdoors, getting lost in pristine wilderness it breaks my heart to find plastic and other waste everywhere I go. From a scientific perspective we've entered the Anthropocene, a new era of geologic time where our modern life is having a marked impact on climate and the environment. I see this as a motivator to take action rather than a reason to give up. I try to do my part, commuting by bike when I can, reusing everything, growing and preserving my own organic food, and being aware of my material wants to limit wasteful purchasing. While I feel like I am making a small difference personally, I know that isn’t enough. We need to upend the way we think about consumption and change the way society treats waste. Working with the Renewal Workshop feels like a real and measurable step in the right direction.
What’s your favorite Renewed item?
I love Prana - I have a renewed down coat that was clutch on my last road trip when the temps dropped at night (I was in the high desert). Their products have a timeless style whether you’re on the trail or out on the town and they are built to last. They match my lifestyle and sensibilities perfectly.
Do you have a tip, trick, or advice to share with others living circular?
Dream big, start small. If you are hoping to make a change in your life with regard to waste and your effect on the environment, start by setting small and achievable goals rather than aiming for the sky. Those big, long-term goals are great in an ideal world, but it can be really easy to miss a milestone or get disenfranchised with slow progress. If you instead break the long-term goal into short-term steps you are more likely to follow through and the success of each goal will bolster your resolve. This is true with all things in life.
